Of course such a lens for a DSLR would be very large, very heavy and very expensive - if it could be built at all. They've been around on consumer video cameras for a while. The trick is, of course, that they aren't actually mm lenses. They are mm "35mm equivalent" lenses in that they provide the same angle of view or "reach" or "magnification" as a lens of that focal length range mounted on a camera with a 24mmx36mm sensor. That makes the lens much more practical to make. It can even be made small, light and fairly inexpensive.

Also, for those who like a lot of direct control over settings and like to change those settings frequently, the SX50's control design isn't the best; it's closer to a point-and-shoot than a digital SLR despite appearances.

Also, the auto white balance is warm indoors, which doesn't help color when combined with higher ISOs; use the presets or use the custom option when possible. In fact after I returned the camera loaned to me by Canon, I bought one for myself. So what's wrong with the images?

On back is a control dial that sits on top of a four-way directional pad. The auto white balance setting failed to eliminate the orange cast of incandescent lighting but produced close-to-neutral colours under fluorescent lights. The dial is used for navigation as well as changing settings. Also available is an auto with movie clip mode which records a few seconds of video before each shot from a buffer, it doesn't wait to take the shot. A couple of things about the design of the controls might make shooting frustrating for some users. In the center of this is a "Set" button which is used to call up various shooting parameter options and set selected values. Focus tracking performed well at shorter focal lengths but the system encountered problems towards the longer end of the zoom range, causing recordings to be slightly jumpy.
