Caillou is a 4-year-old boy who serves as the main protagonist of the TV series and books, all of the same name. He is presented as a curious, adventurous young child who enjoys exploring the world around him and is intended to be a representation of a real preschooler. Caillou's unique trait is the fact that he is completely bald; this decision was made after his creators began to age the character in the hopes of keeping Caillou recognizable and promoting diversity. Caillou is shown to be a caring, adventurous, helpful, imaginative 4-year old child. Overall he constantly asks questions about the world around him and is always ready for another adventure. In the first season, Caillou tends to lose his temper when things don't go his way.

It was originally set to premiere on Peacock with 52 minute episodes some time in , but ultimately began streaming on February 15, , with a batch of seven episodes. Caillou lives with his mother, father, and younger sister, Rosie. He has many adventures with his family and friends, and uses his imagination in every episode. Each episode in seasons 1 through 3 has a theme and is divided into several short sections that mix animation, puppet skits, and video of live-action children in real-life situations. In seasons 4 and 5, the episodes are divided into three short sections; the puppet segment was dropped, alongside the "Real Kids" version of the segment. During the first season, many of the stories in the animated version began with a grandmother who is also the show's narrator introducing the story to her grandchildren, then reading the story from a book. Starting in the second season, the narrator and grandmother is an unseen character.

Caillou ponders growing up, and the changes that come with getting older. Caillou spends his summer doing many new things. While the family is on vacation, they go to the beach and camping in the woods. The cold water takes some getting used to but once he's in, it's alot of fun. While camping he gets to sleep outside in the hammock with daddy and even sees a moose.
