By Rachael Bunyan. Bud Light has seen its sales plummet even further amid ongoing backlash to its disastrous collaboration with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
Following a boycott of Bud Light, which was punished by its conservative customers for offering a paid sponsorship deal to transgender social media influencer Dylan Mulaney, it's now Target 's turn to be on the receiving end of similar action. The retailer, the seventh largest in the country, recently came under fire from conservatives for including "tuck-friendly" swimsuits in its collection of clothes for the Pride season. Tuck-friendly clothes allow transgender women who have not had gender-affirming surgery to conceal their private parts. The swimsuit had the power to immediately throw Target into the middle of the same culture-war storm that hit Bud Light in early April, when news emerged of a paid sponsorship deal with Mulvaney. A TikTok star who became famous by sharing her transition journey on social media with her " days of girlhood" series, Mulvaney posted a video on her Instagram showing a commemorative can featuring her image that Bud Light sent her to celebrate her first year of womanhood. The deal sparked an outraged reaction from some conservatives who accused the brand of betraying its core customers and their values, with many calling for a boycott of the brand. The controversy caused by the promotional deal with Mulvaney and subsequent backlash proved damaging for Bud Light and parent company Anheuser-Busch, as industry data shows that sales of Bud Light declined more than 17 percent in April.

A former Anheuser-Busch executive is stepping up his public criticism of how the company is dealing with a controversy that has tanked sales of the company's Bud Light brand. Sales dropped and conservatives called for boycotts of the top-selling beer after an April social media promotion by transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Meanwhile, former Anheuser-Busch sales and distribution president Anson Frericks, a vocal critic of corporate ESG, or environmental, social, and governance policies, is now calling for Whitworth to resign. Frericks told Insider that Anheuser-Busch's and Whitworth's responses to the backlash have failed to "address the problem head-on," and have "continued to divide customers and hurt their sales. Whitworth released two statements responding to the backlash, in April and June, before making an appearance on CBS. Earlier this week, Frericks continued his scrutiny of the company in an interview with Newsweek, saying: "Anheuser-Busch did not understand their customer base and kind of also where their customer base is, in terms of what messaging they want to see from Bud Light. Frericks' comments added to the barrage of criticism he's leveled at the beer brand since April. Frericks wrote an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal , opining the brand was focused on "stakeholder capitalism," which he wrote "prioritizes broad social issues over shareholder value. Related stories. Frericks was president of sales and distribution at Anheuser-Busch from October until he left the company in April after nearly 11 years there. He is now the president of Strive Asset Management. Strive is an anti-ESG investing firm whose stated mission is "to restore the voices of everyday citizens in the American economy by leading companies to focus on excellence over politics. Frericks told Insider he left Anheuser-Busch on his own terms to start Strive. He cofounded the company with conservative firebrand Vivek Ramaswamy , who is now running for president on an "anti-woke" platform.

More than two months later - from June 22 - the brand cautiously resumed posting notably more politically neutral and often faceless adverts on its social media accounts. Alissa Heinerscheid, vice president of marketing for Bud Light, and her boss, Daniel Blake, Budweiser's group vice president for marketing, faced criticism and even death threats earlier this month after sending the social media influencer commemorative Bud Light cans with her image to promote a sweepstakes contest for the company. Now, both executives have taken leaves of absence, the company said in an email to the Journal. The decision to go on leave "wasn't voluntary" on the executives' parts, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Todd Allen, the former global vice president of Budweiser, will take on the role of vice president of marketing at Bud Light in place of Heinerscheid, Ad Age reported.
