An excellent start for the new crime series. The foreshadowing in this book is something Mead is very skilled with. It is satisfying to see a protagonist who is clearly flawed as a character, but still likable and distinctive. Create a free account to discover what your friends think of this book! When former hotshot homicide detective Tom "Doc" Holliday is recruited to join Special Crimes, he trades in his boring desk job for a second chance to do what he does best, hunt down killers. I highly recommend. I could not have asked for a better urban fantasy. Interesting to see the development of the relationship, the sexy times, and how Ben is educating Clove in what it means to be a vampire beyond the obvious , teaching him control as the relationship builds. It was a little difficult to trace where exactly their relationship stood at any given time because, although they did come to trust and even like each other more and more in true buddy cop style through the story, each scene had to be taken separately and they could be exchanging quips or snarling at each other like junkyard dogs depending on how grumpy Deacon was or when Holliday had last had a coffee. I include a couple of examples later in this review. And I did, and it was wonderful.

Was disappointed with Blood Lines and the plot of counterterrorism. This is my jam, as they say! Are they finally going to meet their mysterious father? The character building was precise and did not have to be elaborate, but it was enough to make them human, evil, lovable and imperfect. He's a recovering addict with a secret psychic gift that just landed him a spot on a newly formed special police unit, and his first case is an unusual murder: a woman found dead without a drop of blood left in her body. Yet something fishy quickly comes up. Then, he called his his Strigoi friends using Sydney and Adrian as a bargain for being re-awakened. Empire City feels both gritty and dirty, while still maintaining a sense of wonder and awe. I read these books as a teen and it remains my fav vampire series.
