What that means for Kenpachi Zaraki is that some intense training is required--training that will either end in his death, or the death of his opponent, a fellow Soul Reaper captain. While Kyoraku feared that this training would end with one of them dead, it seems that both Zaraki and Unohana really are fighting as if it's life or death, the only true way to awaken latent potential. Zaraki was already badly injured during the invasion of the Quincy, although it wasn't as severe as Byakuya's wounds. With Head Captain Yamamoto dead and Byakuya in recovery, the Soul Reapers are already down two captains, putting them at a major disadvantage should the Quincy attack again.

Later, in the Muken level of the Central Great Underground Prison in the Seireiteian elevator reaches the bottom floor and opens to reveal Kenpachi, who walks forward with a grin and comments on how grandiose the stage is while admitting that he is surprised that Unohana was able to get permission to use it bleach retsu unohana fight their fight, prompting Unohana to note that it was Shunsui's orders as she stands with her back turned to him, bleach retsu unohana fight. At some point in the past, she named herself Yachiru Unohana. Unohana was a founding member of the Gotei 13 and thus one of its first generation members. Some time after becoming a captain, she undertook a mission to eliminate the warriors on the edges of Rukongai. Having lost interest in fighting, Unohana wandered from place to place in search of something that would please her sword and came across a young Kenpachi Zaraki. He attacked and injured her and she enjoyed their fight, but she was weaker than him. He unconsciously sealed his power to allow them to fight and lost to her. It is stated that the four of them have been Captains of the Gotei 13 for at least years as of years ago before the current time. This makes her one of the oldest captains among the Gotei 13, despite her rather youthful appearance. Ukitake also refers to her as "Senpai" denoting her seniority to both him and Shunsui.
