Today's focus is Tempest , the twelfth Magic expansion set, which was released in October of , and is the first set in the aptly named Tempest block. Around the time that Tempest was released, Wizards of the Coast was experimenting with a ratings system for their sets based around the level of play experience the target audience ought to have. Tempest , along with all other expansion sets, were labeled expert-level sets. This is also the first set after Antiquities that featured Richard Garfield , the creator of Magic , in an active designer role. While this was technically an expert-level set, the set mechanics of shadow and buyback are actually pretty intuitive. Shadow is just a variant of flying or horsemanship, and buyback allows you to, well, buy things back after using them. Even though tempest and storm are synonyms, Tempest was not the set where storm was introduced. Now then, the cards! By far the most popular card from the set, Ancient Tomb sits atop this throne for a very good reason. Today I'm going to share my top 10 list of new cards from Actually, I'm going to share TWO top 10 lists, but the first will be brief.
December 31, by Andrew Cummings. If I had to give an adjective, I'd likely pick 'extraordinary'. The bad was truly awful, the odd was exceptionally so, and the bright spots all felt just a bit brighter because of it. If I'm hoping for anything from , a bit of normalcy, even normalcy bordering on dull or monotonous, would be welcome. This is also the first set after Antiquities that featured Richard Garfield , the creator of Magic , in an active designer role. If it wasn't originally printed in Tempest , I wouldn't think twice if I saw this first printed in a Commander set or something similar. We are now firmly in the "Treasure Era" of Magic , so the number of decks that are creating and sacrificing tokens willy-nilly is simply enormous. The fact that this is at Sorcery speed is probably the only limiting factor, but it's still a fantastic spell that belongs in any black deck and nearly any two-colored deck that is in black. All three of these mana dorks have impacted my games, with Kami of Whispered Hopes being particularly strong in my Raggadragga, Goreguts Boss deck. I built and played a bunch of Lord of the Rings commanders and only one of them is still together. It's a fun build that won't overpower a table but should give me a decent chance at winning.
