The difference between wood chips, bark, and other types of mulch are their ability to insulate the ground, retain moisture in soil, deposit nutrients, prevent weed growth, and how often they need to be replaced. A layer of mulch three to four inches deep deters weed growth. Mulch protects the soil around your plants.
