Barclays has announced it will be closing its Haltwhistle and Prudhoe branches later in the year. The announcement comes from noticing the declining use of transactions taking place inside a branch. The Haltwhistle branch will be closing on Friday, August 11 whereas the Prudhoe will be shut a few days later on Friday, August Customers will receive a letter, a decision to close document and there will also posters displayed in branch, as well as colleagues on hand to assist customers with any concerns they may have. They have also announced that they will be engaging with local businesses and the wider community to discuss the alternative ways customers will be able to undertake their banking locally. This is reflected at the Prudhoe and Haltwhistle branches, and as we adapt, we are finding new ways to support our customers by maintaining our community presence with options for customers who still require in-person support. We are currently working with the local community to identify suitable locations and will announce details once confirmed.

B arclays have been praised by local politicians after it opened a new "local site" in a town to replace a branch it recently closed. Prudhoe's branch closed on August 11, claiming that the likes of mobile banking and telephone banking had a "big impact on the number of customers" using the branch. A report sent out by Barclays to customers explained that just 15 customers used the branch as the only way to do their banking. The branch was among 99 closures across the country since the start of the year, including outlets in both Haltwhistle and Seahouses. On Friday, Barclays launched a new "Barclays Local" service in the town in order to maintain face-to-face contact. Located at the Spetchells Centre on Front Street, the service provides easy access for customers with "digital and complex banking needs". Mr Opperman added: "I wish to thank the Barclays team for ensuring a visible presence remains in the town. Staff will be on hand on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 9. Services will include financial support and education for customers - but the centre is a cashless site, meaning everyday banking transactions will need to be carried out at the nearby post office.
