For many people, a barbell is hands down the most intimidating piece of equipment in the gym. I felt that way, too, the first time I ever touched one. The thing is, even if you've lifted with dumbbells and kettlebells , a barbell is kind of its own beast. It's much bigger, and you can't hold it with one hand. You can't maneuver it around your body quite as deftly. When it rests on a rack, you have to remove it and put it back with the proper form. And if you've ever seen a power lifter doing their thing, you've probably also thought, OK, wow, barbells are not for little old me. But they totally can be. You definitely should master bodyweight exercises before progressing to barbells or any weights, for that matter , but as long as you have a foundation of strength and know how to do basic strength training exercises with stellar form, there's no reason you can't give barbells a try.
