I wanted to see what it would look like if Audi had ever built an RS4 on the B6 platform—-not the B7—-or again, at least a transitional platform, that blends in various elements of both platforms. And yet everyone who sees it swears it looks OE—which of course was the entire point. Parts were sourced from the UK, France and Belgium—-took me about 9 months to gather it all notice the front and rear bumper covers—-no corner markers like US-spec. The B6 doors are also slightly flatter, and a few other elements, that involved more custom work to pull off but also gives the car a different and cleaner? It took countless hours to get it right, but it came out super clean and OEM. The rear doors also had to be flared out to blend in with the rear fenders, which was no small feat.

Just wondered if anyone knows definitively why Audi didn't do an RS4 on the B6 - I was asked today and didn't know the answer? My guess is that it's due to the short period that the B6 spanned and the fact that I think at that time Audi still only manufactured one RS model at a time, which then would have been the C5 RS6. The RS ethos back in the day was 1 model at a time, limited production and at the end of the model life. As above, plus they usually wait until nearer the end of a chassis' shelf life to release the RS. If they released it too soon the S4 would suffer sales losses. Very clever marketing really, the release one to whet the appetite, then release the other once the S has started to run its course. PS, this is not fact, just my logic.

It could be the best RS 4 of them all, and not just because it might be the last. Often you need to make mistakes along the way to end up in a better place, and the Audi RS 4 is a perfect example of this. Back when it was first launched in , the RS 4 was a blast of fresh air, aimed quite specifically in the direction of the BMW M3. They had their faults, true, but the early RS 4s were likeable cars, bubbling with technology, performance and practicality in a way that made them unique. Some of them, most notably the B7 model of , were also lovely cars to drive. But then Audi lost the plot for a while with the RS 4. The cars became wooden to drive and angular to look at. After eight months and not an especially large number of miles due to lockdown, I was absolutely smitten. What this particular car has in abundance is charm and driver appeal, albeit of the slightly old-fashioned kind.

The RS2 Avant pictured above was a crazy variation of the Audi 80—based S2, which itself was offered first as a coupe with subsequent sedan and Avant derivatives. The B6 and B7 Avant rear tail lights are mostly identical going from the top-down about 5 or 6 inches, but the B6 ones were much taller and larger than B7, presenting a serious challenge.
