It covers the " Royal Government " chapters 51—72 and " Return to Shiganshina " chapters 73—90 arcs from the original manga by Hajime Isayama. The season follows Eren and his fellow soldiers from the Survey Corps who are still fighting for their survival against the terrifying Titans. However, threats arise not only from the Titans beyond the walls, but from the humans within them as well. After being rescued from the Colossal and Armored Titans, all seems well for the soldiers, until the government suddenly demands custody of Eren and Historia. Sought after by the government, Levi and his new squad must evade their adversaries in hopes of keeping Eren and Historia safe. In the second half of the season, the Survey Corps led by Erwin embark on a mission to retake Wall Maria, returning to the tattered Shiganshina District that was once Eren's home. The Survey Corps strive to carve a path towards victory as Eren vows to take back everything that was once his.

The Colossal Titan threatens to destroy everything in Shiganshina by scattering burning debris all over the town. He tells Armin to keep thinking. The Scouts on the other side have defeated all the small Titans nearby, with only those in front still standing. Still, the question remains on how to defeat the remaining large Titans that are lined up with the Beast. It seems the enemy is content to watch idly in their position. Levi looks back on the other side when a barrage of rocks and debris fall on them like artillery. The Beast Titan starts his attack by launching huge boulders like they were baseballs, destroying many of the Scouts in front. He launches another volley again and kills even more. Levi retreats and tells everyone to hide behind the walls with their horses. It forces Commander Erwin to drop and reconvene with them. Another volley arrives, so Levi asks for a plan. Jean then decides to attack him on his legs and tells Armin to keep observing from afar. Jean calls out for another attack, distracting Bertholdt while Mikasa shoots from behind.

Historia is about to inject herself with the Titan serum when she sees Eren is too guilt-ridden to resist.
