It's , and somewhere on the edge of the desert in the American Southwest, between kitsch postcard and John Ford vista, sits the eponymous town, a sun-bleached wasteland whose lone "point of interest" — not counting a comically unfinished ramp to nowhere — is a crater said to have been formed when a meteorite hit the earth thousands of years ago. Atomic bomb tests rattle the windows of the local diner, while a roadrunner bird — complete with a droll "meep meep" — scampers across the landscape. On the eve of Asteroid City's annual Junior Stargazers and Space Cadets convention, an unlikely cross-section of the American populace — played by a sizeable chunk of Hollywood's acting A-List — descends upon the town. There's a recently widowed war photographer, Augie Steenbeck Jason Schwartzman , and his kids, who number one brainiac teenage son Jake Ryan and three little girls cosmically named Andromeda, Cassiopeia and Pandora , who arrive with a tupperware container full of their mum's ashes on its way to Grandpa a silvery Tom Hanks. They've all set up at a motel — run by Steve Carrell's officious, visor-clad oddball — whose vending machines variously dispense soda pop, martinis, and barren plots of real estate. The occasion also brings scientists, including a loopy astronomer played by who else Tilda Swinton, and the US military, with Jeffrey Wright's five-star general capturing the heady, turbulent spirit of the Atomic Age.

This tale of earth-shattering events in a space-obsessed desert town leans nicely into its own artificiality, and every delicious, microscopic detail is a delight. But I have to say the first category is the only place to be for what is simply a terrifically entertaining and lightly sophisticated new comedy from Wes Anderson, in his signature rectilinear, deadpan style, with primary-pastel colours and his all-star repertory ensemble cast. So, too, does its dapper styling of classic American pop culture.
