The atomic whirl is atheist symbol symbol of science and has come to be used as a symbol of atheism in general, atheist symbol. The Atomic Whirl is based on 1ml dropper historical Rutherford model of the atom, which erroneously showed the orbital paths of electrons around the central nucleusand not on the atomic orbitals. The symbol is used by the American Atheists organization to symbolize that "only through the use of scientific analysis and free, open inquiry can humankind reach out for a better life", atheist symbol.
An international symbol for atheism has long been needed. When American Atheists was formed in , a contemporary scientific symbol was chosen; this acknowledges that only through the use of scientific analysis and free, open inquiry can humankind reach out for a better life. Recognizing the new atomic era, but also emphasizing the truths of older scientific findings, the atomic whirl was chosen. The atom is still a distinguishing unit of all matter, the smallest particle of an element that can exist and still retain the properties of that element. You may notice that one of the orbitals in our symbol is broken, or open-ended. This demonstrates that while atheists rely on the scientific method for learning about the cosmos and increasing our knowledge about nature, we know that not all of the answers are in. We recognize that with new knowledge come new questions and areas for human inquiry and exploration.

Atheism , in the broadest sense, is an absence of belief in the existence of deities. Less broadly, atheism is a rejection of the belief that any deities exist. In an even narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities. Atheism is contrasted with theism , which in its most general form is the belief that at least one deity exists. Historically, evidence of atheistic viewpoints can be traced back to classical antiquity and early Indian philosophy. In the Western world, atheism declined as Christianity gained prominence. The 16th century and the Age of Enlightenment marked the resurgence of atheistic thought in Europe. Atheism achieved a significant position in the 20th century with legislation protecting freedom of thought. According to estimates, there are at least million atheists in the world. Atheist organizations have defended the autonomy of science , secular ethics and secularism.

The purpose of this entry is to explore how atheism and agnosticism are related to theism and, more importantly, to each other. Settling this issue, at least for the purposes of this entry, will set the stage for discussing an important distinction between global atheism and local atheism, which in turn will be helpful for distinguishing different forms of agnosticism. Examination of an argument in support of a modest form of agnosticism will ensue, followed by discussion of three arguments for atheism and one argument against a more ambitious form of agnosticism. In the psychological sense of the word, atheism is a psychological state, specifically the state of being an atheist, where an atheist is defined as someone who is not a theist and a theist is defined as someone who believes that God exists or that there are gods. This generates the following definition: atheism is the psychological state of lacking the belief that God exists. Thus, to be an atheist on this definition, it does not suffice to suspend judgment on whether there is a God, even though that implies a lack of theistic belief. Instead, one must deny that God exists. This metaphysical sense of the word is preferred over other senses, including the psychological sense, not just by theistic philosophers, but by many though not all atheists in philosophy as well. This definition is also found in multiple encyclopedias and dictionaries of philosophy.
