Arvor 20

Arvor Boats has stood almost alone in Australia for nearly 20 years with its fibreglass semi-planing hulls running diesel shaft-drives, arvor 20.

No prizes for coming up with a use for this boat. From catching whiting in Port Phillip Bay to snagging snapper in the channels off Whyalla, from cruising to Tangalooma at a fast clip to pottering lazily about Sydney Harbour, the Arvor 20 is tailor-made for doing a variety of things on the water. A pocket-sized diesel-powered craft, the Arvor puts a new spin on a classic theme. It has a wheelhouse just like fishing boats of old, but it doesn't shake, rattle and roll. Instead, the Arvor flies along thanks to a puissant turbo-charged Nanni Diesel motor spinning a shaft-driven prop. The boat delivers a useful turn of speed, terrific onboard comfort, and giant-killer performance at sea.

The Arvor 20SF is quite a unique boat. Indeed, quite different to anything previously seen on the Australian market. It combines the flexibility of being trailerable with the reliability and economy of diesel shaftdrive power. The trailerable diesel shaftdrive concept has many advantages and I'm surprised we haven't previously seen vessels of this configuration in Oz. Standard power for the Arvor is an 85hp turbocharged five-cylinder Nanni Diesel engine. Traditionally the Australian trailerboat fisherman wanted to go fast, hence the popularity in outboard-powered trailerboats. However, with fuel prices hitting a dollar a litre, many trailerboat owners are finding it too expensive to run their big carbed two-stroke outboards.

We ran a review of this boat a year or so ago but there have been a few new features added to this pocket cruiser that are worth a mention. The Arvor 20 is now manufactured under strict guidelines and the watchful eye of Peter Collins at Nowra, on the South Coast. Collins Marine, based at Alexandria, is the Arvor agent for Australia. Arvors are now a regular sight on many of our waterways, proving that Peter has cornered a nice little niche market. Speak to any Arvor owner and the positive vibes are hard to miss. The changes to the latest models are not numerous but they are significant.

Standard power for the Arvor is an 85hp turbocharged five-cylinder Nanni Diesel engine. There were other shaft-drive boats on the market, particularly displacement hulls and ski boats, but the Arvor 20 was really the first commercially available production semi-planing hull to gain true recreational acceptance. The first model to come off the mould was launched through Hunts Marine in Sydney who, we're told, thought it even better made than the original, which we tested.
