Often known as a Fisherman sweater , they are distinguished by their use of complex textured stitch patterns, several of which are combined in the creation of a single garment. The original knitting process for an authentic Aran sweater used untreated unscoured wool. The reason for this is that the untreated wool was naturally water-repellant, making it ideal as a clothing material for the often very wet weather of the Aran Islands.
