I put a second generation sand cast aluminum in my truck about 20k ago, can't say I have noticed any difference.

It's real easy to warp or crack a set of aluminum heads on a watercooled car where 'overheating' is close to normal operating temp for our aircooled engines. It is darker than we would do for an aerospace treatment. As long as machine tools last longer cutting the soft magnesium, thats the way VW will go. Again, very expensive. Thoes motor cases must have been in the tank for a few hours. Your opinions? Anybody have any idea why? I have seen trans oil temps approaching F on my four speed in the summer at 70 mph. I use aluminum cases where overall strength is needed, and magnesium where low power and light weight are the right combo. The only excellent advantage of magnesium is really light weight and in areas where torsion or leverage is not applied against is over too great of a length The USA had lots, but weren't about to sell it to the Nazis for fear that they may use it in military aircraft or dirigibles.
