When MIT was founded inmost students lived locally and commuted from home, alpha aka. Together with eight other coeds at the mecca for Negro alpha aka, Hedgeman crafted a design that not only fostered interaction, stimulation, and ethical growth among members; but also provided hope for the masses. Ransom ' Hope felt that an effective group was needed through which Black women on predominantly White campuses could communicate and help each other.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African American women in areas where they had little power or authority due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early 20th century. The sorority is one of the nation's largest Greek-letter organizations, having had more than , members in 1, chapters in the United States and several other countries. Howard faculty member Ethel T. Robinson encouraged Hedgemon by relating her own observances of sorority life at the Women's College at Brown University. Robinson and other female students had not been able to participate in the existing sororities because of their race. Our founders were among the fewer than 1, Negroes enrolled in higher education institutions in , and the 25 women who received bachelor of arts degrees from Howard University between and Nine juniors and seniors constituted the founding members. Seven sophomores who were extended an invitation for membership without initiation were endowed with founder status. Each also had a special talent or gift that further enhanced the potential of this dynamic group. While at Howard University, Brown was an honor student, a library aide, a member of the school choir and a passionate writer. Brown was an advocate of history and was known especially for her annual Negro History Week exhibits that received national media attention. She became a charter member and president of Beta Omega Chapter in Kansas City, MO, a charter member and president of Mu Omega Chapter in Kansas City, KS and chartered the first three undergraduate chapters of the sorority that were established after incorporation. Forty-five years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, most African-Americans were still struggling to attain basic human rights and very few attended college. In , however, nine young women at Howard University built a support system for themselves and resolved to create change—through education, community service and sisterhood—for Black people everywhere. AKA , which celebrates its hundredth anniversary this year, boasts , members worldwide, including writer Toni Morrison, astronaut Mae C. Jemison and musician Alicia Keys. Grammy-winning singer Alicia Keys joined the historic organization as an honorary member in McKinzie about the original nine members.
