Ten adventurers attempt to survive the wilderness of Vancouver Island with only whatever they've been able to place into a backpack. The reality series about surviving in the wilderness goes back to Vancouver Island for its fourth season, but introduces a big change in the cast: the contestants are now 14, divided into seven pairs. At the start of Season 4, one team member for each team is dropped at a campsite, while the other is dropped 10 miles away with only a compass to find their way to their teammate. Each team also operates as a unit: if either member decides to tap out or has to be evacuated, the entire team is disqualified. The contestants include brothers Jim and Ted Baird, survivalist experts, and Pete and Sam Brockdorff, a father and son duo with degrees in scientific fields and a shared history of learning survival skills. History's Alone is returning for a fourth season, and in my humble opinion, there's nothing more fun than watching other people suffer on reality TV while on the couch with a snack within reach. That's a hefty amount of cash, but the cast is expected to do quite a bit. In addition to lasting longer than the rest of their castmates, the Alone competitors film themselves, so there's no camera crew with them out in the wilderness. However, this season will be a little different, because instead of operating in true solitude, the contestants will be working in pairs. Still no camera crew or producers in sight, but, for once, they won't really be "alone. These 14 contenders think that they're ready.
We can hardly wait for the new season of Alone to air on History, which as we revealed last month comes with a twist when it starts next week. This season of Alone is set in Northern Vancouver Island and features seven pairs of family members, who will be dropped miles apart. Jim Baird, 35, of Toronto, Canada is a freelance writer, mineral prospector, and wilderness guide with a mapmaking company. He is an avid canoeist, and has in the past completed a self-propelled trek across the northern Ungava Peninsula in winter — a mile Arctic trip he completed with his dog, Buck. His teammate is his brother Ted Baird.
