It can refer to a character that's dual- or multi-classed, one that has a trait or skill that makes them unique, or maybe they're an adherent of a mysterious school of spellcraft or spiritual discipline. Thanks to the variety of supplemental materials available with the release of 5e, there's a whole selection of character subclasses for players to experience. These choices exist outside the Player's Handbook but are still considered official subclasses as opposed to the results of a homebrew or theory-craft session. As the already impressive Wizards of the Sword Coast library continues to grow, so do the options players have when it comes to controlling even the smallest and most intricate details of their protagonists. The Storm Sorcerer might be a combination of the base Sorcerer with the Tempest subclass of the Cleric, but this subclass is all damage and follows the strict rules regarding AC that other spellcasters typically follow. There's not a lot of versatility when it comes to this subclass, but what it lacks in creativity it makes up for in sheer power.

After all, one wizard won't be the same as the next, and we're not just talking about their personality either. You may have your classes, but then you also have to make the choice of your subclass , which are niches that your particular class would focus on. It's the difference between a wizard who uses a sword and one who manipulates time. Some subclasses are better than others, with great abilities that can make any character that follows a particular subclass stand out. Barbarians are going to be beasts regardless of their subclass, but there's nothing wrong with a little help, and that's where Path of the Ancestral Guardians comes in. On top of offering some really great roleplaying opportunities by using the ghosts of a character's ancestors for aid in combat, the barbarian gets some massive buffs. Ancestral Protectors, in particular, are very strong, making an enemy have disadvantage to attack anyone but you. It's a good thing that you're perfectly capable of defeating almost anyone in melee as a Barbarian. Although it seems odd for a bard to focus on history, it actually makes a lot of sense. After all, what is history if not a story?
