Adapted from the short story "Saying Goodbye to Yang" by Alexander Weinstein, which is included in the author's collection, "Children of the New World. The home of the family was based on mid-century "California Modern" structures developed by Joseph Eichler. In just his second feature, 'Columbus' director Kogonada emerges as a major voice — although audiences may have to lean in to hear it. By Peter Debruge. Chief Film Critic. Dick project might. Kogonada uses innovation not to alarm, but as license to ruminate on how certain human functions work, among them memory, attachment and what we think of as individuality. That film felt like the live-action equivalent of a Chris Ware comic strip: smart, a little schematic, a lot melancholy, its every frame seemingly mapped out on graph paper in advance. This film is similarly precise, with its desaturated palette, meticulous framing and near-mathematical cutting style consider the opening-credits dance contest or the sly way one shot lingers on an empty room long enough to discover an intruder. Farrell, who typically comes across agitated and aggressive, has never given such an understated performance, and Kogonada dials it down even further by shooting the actor from a distance and from semi-inscrutable angles — a trick he lifted from Ozu. In the film, Yang simply stops working, but the dead eyes can be just as disturbing.

The movie literally was like watching paint dry Edit page. It neither impresses nor makes any real point. I like slow burners. Lessons aren't delivered, but experienced. T his entirely absorbing movie from Korean-American director Kogonada is adapted from a short story by Alexander Weinstein in his collection Children of the New World ; it floats on a Zen updraft of wisdom and ideas. There are touches of Philip K Dick and even Charlie Kaufman, and this is also a pregnant meditation on grief, loss, memory and consciousness. When Yang goes into an unexplained coma, it is deeply upsetting: a bereavement-shock far beyond the malfunction of some gadget.
The film shows Yang setting a self-timer you can hear it buzzing but the Pentax K has no self-timer function. Colin Farrell has a difficult character to play.
