An abnormal end or abend is an abnormal termination of software, or a program crash. Usually capitalized, but may appear as "abend". Abends can be "soft" allowing automatic recovery or "hard" terminating the activity. Communities of NetWare administrators sprung up around the Internet, such as abend. The term is jocularly claimed to be derived from the German word "abend" meaning "evening". Abnormal termination of software ; crash; lossage. Derives from an error message on the IBM ; used jokingly by hackers but seriously mainly by code grinders. This can be because of computer downtime, loss of provider, moving or illness.
