2003 draft class
Considered the GOAT by some, 2003 draft class, LeBron James faced nearly insurmountable expectations heading into the NBA, was proclaimed to be a future Hall-of-Famer before dribbling a basketball even once as a professional, and has undoubtedly surpassed them all.
The draft consisted of seven rounds, with teams selecting in the reverse order of the finish the previous season. There were 32 compensatory picks distributed among 15 teams, with five teams each receiving four additional selections. There was little drama when the draft began with the Cincinnati Bengals selecting Carson Palmer , as Palmer had agreed to contract terms with the Bengals the previous day. He became the first Heisman Trophy winner selected first overall in the draft since Vinny Testaverde in Irrelevant ". The draft took an odd turn with the Minnesota Vikings' pick in the first round.

The NBA announced that 41 college and high school players and a record 31 international players had filed as early-entry candidates for the NBA draft. The draft is known for having one of the deepest talent pools in NBA history. The draft contained 15 players who combined for 26 championships. Luke Walton won three NBA championships, two as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers in and and one as an assistant coach with the Warriors in Chris Bosh left the Toronto Raptors in as its all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks, double doubles, free throws made and attempted, and minutes played; he went on to win championships with the Miami Heat in and Eleven of the players selected in this draft never played in an NBA game throughout their professional basketball careers. Two of those players were the sole selection of the draft by their respective teams: Malick Badiane Houston's only pick and Paccelis Morlende Philadelphia's only pick.
There aren't many things in professional sports that live up to the hype. The NBA draft was one of them. Excitement was building for over a year -- first among league executives and then among fans -- about the new blood on its way. And boy, did the league need it. The NBA was in a recession. With Michael Jordan retired, for good this time, and a scarcity of marketable young stars, fan interest had waned. The NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and New Jersey Nets were the lowest rated in history, losing more than 50 percent of the audience from just five years earlier when Jordan won his last title with the Bulls. There was a belief, or at least a hope, that a new generation of stars could turn things around, and the class had several promising candidates.
