The Xbox controller is the primary game controller for Microsoft 's Xbox home video game console and was introduced at the Game Developers Conference in The first-generation Xbox controller nicknamed "The Duke" was the first controller bundled with Xbox systems for all territories except Japan. A smaller and redesigned variant, called "Controller S", was sold and bundled with the console in Japan. It was later released in other territories and by the end of had replaced the first-generation controller worldwide. The larger original controller remained available as an optional accessory. When the physical design of the controller began, circuit boards for the controller had already been manufactured. Microsoft had asked their supplier, Mitsumi Electric , for a similar folded and stacked circuit board design used in Sony's DualShock 2 controller, but the company refused to manufacture such a design for Microsoft.

The sixth generation of console gaming offered some of the biggest upsets in console video game history in the decades following its crash. Former console powerhouse Sega said goodbye, Sony claimed some of the highest console sales in history, and an American company managed to reenter the console market and actually grab hold of the second place sales spot. Microsoft had become interested in console video games after helping develop Windows CE for the Sega Dreamcast and watching PC sales begin to decline in the closing days of the dot-com bubble. The possibility of a Microsoft console was first mentioned by Bill Gates in late , which was then confirmed by the company in a March press release. The Xbox has become a symbol of much consternation with gamers in a generation where competition was quite fierce. Despite what criticism may remain from days gone by and what criticism is now being fired at its successor, the Xbox , the Xbox deserves its place among the likes of the Dreamcast, Gamecube, and PS2, and fully deserves to have its library explored. Even though it was overshadowed by the Playstation 2, the orignal Xbox had a respectable game library — especially by the end of its lifespan. They say it's a good product for the price. Missing the end, useless without it. Retrieved May 18, Controller works great, haven't had a problem with it at all. They are also disappointed with connectivity. These controllers are cheaply made and definitely not worth the money. Opinions are mixed on quality and the cleanliness of this product.
