On lap 22 Brambilla challenged for the lead but spun out of contention before retiring 15 laps later with electrical problems.

Lauda still had a strong chance of adding a second title to his name, as he led his nearest chaser Hunt by 14 points with only four rounds remaining. Eight months earlier Lauda made a great start to his campaign by claiming victories at Interlagos and Kyalami, the first two rounds of the season.
