The Mercury Comet is an automobile that was produced by Mercury from — and — — variously as either a compact or an intermediate car. In its first two years, it was marketed as the "Comet" and from as the "Mercury Comet". The compact Comet shared a naming convention associated with the ongoing Space Race of the early s with the Mercury Meteor , which was introduced as the base-trim full-size Mercury sedan. The Comet was initially based on the compact Ford Falcon , then on the intermediate Ford Fairlane , and finally on the compact Ford Maverick. As a Mercury, early Comets received better-grade interior trim than concurrent Falcons, and a slightly longer wheelbase. The Comet was originally planned as an Edsel model.

The original idea for a small Mercury was hatched in by Lewis Crusoe, who was recently installed as the Vice President for car and truck production of the entire Ford Motor Company. Crusoe had been working with the newly anointed Mercury pre-production studio head Arnott "Buzz" Grisinger, and asked Grisinger to begin work on a new small car for Mercury. The concept car came to be known as L'Avion, French for "the airplane.
